So, you've decided that you no longer want to run a website about how to catch your cheating spouse and want to instead start a career in the financial services sector. Well, that's great for you and we wish you all the luck in the world!
However, don't expect that just because you know you want to be a mortgage lender or foreign exchange Toronto adviser means that you can just walk into a bank or the offices of a private financial lender and expect to be given a job. It's great that you know where you want your career to go but that doesn't equal you starting your career at the very top in your new chosen field.
You have to earn your way to the top of the food chain and that all starts by working at the bottom. In most cases that means starting out with an entry-level position. A lot of people tend to look down upon entry-level positions with banks, CAD modeling firms or car dealerships because they don't want to put in the work most entry-level positions require done.
The thing is though that if you aren't willing start at the bottom and earn your shot at the career you want by working hard now then you don't really deserve any position other than that of entry-level. You have to prove what you can do by performing every task you're asked to, be it making copies, typing up reports, making phone calls, taking notes during meetings, setting up power point presentations, updating website information about industrial vehicles, etc.
Most entry-level jobs are directed towards college or high school graduates who know what they want to do with their career. Companies know that and that's why they can offer entry-level positions that are low paying and without benefits. However, that doesn't mean entry-level jobs are for graduates only. If you're a little on the older side of life looking to switch careers and hungry enough to prove yourself then there's nothing to lose by accepting an entry level position, whether it's with a marketing company or real estate agent in Mississauga.
Just show up to work everyday, learn from those around you, bask in any praise but also don't get upset when criticized and, most importantly, don't complain. Entry-level work might seem thankless but it serves a purpose that will enhance your career aspirations. |
